[More Snuggles] and a comparison freebie
What's a mom to do when her OWN little is sobbing hysterically,
"I just want my Mommy to stay home and take care of me!!"
Call in reinforcements, of course!
Gratefully, I have matching littles in my class this year, and their awesome mom happens to be registered as a sub with our district. :)
So. . .after a frantic text at 9:00 pm on Wednesday night, she agreed happily to take my class for the rest of the week. She volunteers for learning rotations each Tuesday, so the kids know (and LOVE) her already!
I can stay home and be the snuggly mom so my little Miss M can get better (this stuff is kicking her trash!) and my school littles will be well taken care of!
Math this week is all about measurement. Comparison is the toughest part of measurement, at least in my own happy little corner of first grade!
This activity will be a Friday brain builder.
I *think* they'll figure it out.

I'd love it if you left a little bloggy love here if you take this.
Thanks!

[Snuggly Day] and a measurement freebie
I'm home today with my little sweetheart who has bronchitis.
Grateful for a doctor who called in not only a prescription for a really good cough syrup to help her heal and sleep, but a prescription for a steriod to strengthen and clear her lungs. These 2 things along with her antibiotic have her on the mend.
We're having a snuggly day. In our jammies. Watching movies. It's a good day to spend a day, although I really do wish she weren't sick!
I know this is posting very late. I've been busy. ;)
Here's a fun little measurement freebie using the adorable clip art from MelonHeadz.
Stop over and say HI! to Nikki. She has such great clip art!
And leave a little love if you take this.
Off to watch HSM2.
And eat popcorn and Cadbury mini eggs that Luke bought us last night when he went to Walgreens at 9:30 to pick up the cough syrup.
Don't be jealous.

{first grade logic, a hero letter, and some non-standard measurement}
I LOVE how first graders think!
On Wednesday, I gave the measurement pre-test.
The last question showed pictures of a crayon, a ladybug, and a paperclip.
The question asked, "Would it take more ladybugs or paperclips to measure the crayon?"
The students were then asked to explain their answer.
I almost laughed out loud when I read K's answer.
He had circled the paperclip and his explanation was you can't measure with a ladybug because it would just fly away.
Can't argue with that logic, buddy!
First Graders are AWESOME!!!
Back in August, September, October, and November, we wrote letters to heroes that are currently serving in the United States military. We sent our letters to Operation Write Home and they forwarded our letters on to heroes. On Monday, we were thrilled to receive a card from one of the heroes that had received one of our letters! The kids have been begging all week to write back, so today, we'll be writing back! :)
If you're looking for a genuine writing assignment during your letter writing unit, I highly recommend Operation Write Home. Your kiddos may not get a letter or card back, BUT THEY JUST MIGHT! The image above is linked to the download and you can find the shipping address for your letters on the Operation Write Home website. Take a few minutes and let your kids make someone's day.
Just a couple of quick non-standard measurement worksheets and then I really MUST get ready for school! Yesterday by this time I was completely ready to go, kids were ready and eating breakfast, AND I'd made a batch of cookie bars! Yikes!
As always, images are linked to the download.
Please leave a comment if you plan to use any of these downloads in your classroom.
Comments make me smile.

{Leprechaun and Cat in the Hat non-standard measurement}
In our class, we will be starting our Measurement math topic on Thursday.
I've been working a little bit on this during centers the past couple of days and have come up with a few quick work pages that the kids have really enjoyed.
The leprechaun page has less measurement practice and is good for a beginning sheet. I added the straight line for students to measure against, creating a more successful experience.
The image is linked to the download.
Since tomorrow is Dr. Seuss day, I figured a Cat in the Hat page would be appropriate.
(The large dark bar is there on purpose - I have found that it's less frustrating for the kiddos to measure against a straight line than an image).
I added some additional units of measurement to this one as the kids were zipping through the other pages and needed a bit of a challenge. :)
If you can use it, the image is linked to the download.
I will be adding more non-standard measurement pages over the course of this topic.
Feedback and comments are very much appreciated!
