[SMASH!] the TENS for 10 more/10 less, 1 more/1 less

First off, I have to say THANK YOU for the comments of support and encouragement here on the bloggity-blog and in my e-mail inbox after my whiny post yesterday.
I'm happy to announce that after following the advice of a fellow blogger (I need to find and link that post!) - I changed my thinking.  Instead of looking at those littles with anger in my heart, I sent up a quick prayer, offered a smile (that was TOUGH!!) and a kind word (even TOUGHER!!!), and holy cow did that ever make a world of difference.
It was a great day.
I was exhausted.  E.X.H.A.U.S.T.E.D. from that extra effort.
Was it worth it?!
Absolutely!!
(And that's not even a BAZINGA! comment!! - Did you watch Big Bang Theory last night?!  Dang was that ever the funniest one I've seen in a while!!).
And on another note, lol. . .
This game works!
Today during learning stations, two of my littles that have been S-T-R-U-G-G-L-I-N-G with the whole concept of 10 more/10 less had a LIGHTBULB moment!  Seriously!  I saw the light come on and listened as they explained how to find the answer!!  OH.MY.WONDERFULNESS!!
Now there are a few others that need that lightbulb. . .
so we're backing up.
Just the tens.
And I changed the wording so that it says "10 more" instead of "10 greater."
A little thing.  But that's the language we use.  :)
I also changed the images so that the regular cards have one image only and the bonus cards have one image only.  Again, a little thing, but it makes it less visually confusing.
Or something like that.
You can download the TENS (with the gameboard and rules) by clicking on the image.
It's been fun to see how many teachers have needed/downloaded the original set of SMASH cards for 10 more/10 less, 1 more/1 less.
I hope you can use this!
HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!

[SMASH!] ten more/ten less * one more/one less

Honestly, I thought my littles understood the concept of 10 more/10 less, 1 more/1 less, but when I gave the final assessment, well, let's just say that the results indicated otherwise.
Yikes!  Big yikes!

We need some additional practice, but are currently focusing on the next topic in our math series (measurement), so I wanted to have a fun little review/practice activity for them to use during learning stations until I can take a few days to reteach.

Their new favorite game is SMASH!  They beg to play Sight Word Smash all.the.time.
Hmmmmm. . .catch them with what they love, right?!

That's how this little game came about.
Plus I had adorable new clip art from Mr. Bubblegum that was begging to be used!  :)

Soooooo. . .introducing ten more/ten less * one more/one less SMASH!
I think my favorite part of this whole little game is the bonus cards which require the littles to actually use the correct mathematical phrase.
(I always run the BONUS cards on a different color of cardstock just to designate that they are BONUS cards).

Enjoy!
If you like this (and take it), a comment would be so appreciated!
Thanks!

[puppy] 0-99 chart coloring activity

I realized [sadly, very, very sadly] that much of the teaching world is out of school for winter break already, and while the Christmas themed 0-99 chart coloring activities are perfect for my classroom right now, they won't be nearly so useful for anyone else.  ;)

With that in mind, and the fact that my little Sparky dog was hilariously funny the other day catching marshmellows as the kids were playing with their marshmellow shooters, today's coloring activity is a puppy (although if you colored brown instead of grey and gave him a red nose, he could be Rudolph for those of us that still have MORE SCHOOL before winter break begins. . .).
The clues are again ten rods and single cubes (this worked soooo much better!).  I projected the clues onto the board and had my monsters take turns coming to the projector to touch and count the sets of cubes.  I now know FOR SURE which kiddos have no clue need more instruction!

If you're interested, the picture is linked to the PDF download.
For some reason, it shows up as 21 pages.  It's not.  Print ONLY the odd pages.  I tried to fix it and could not.  Sorry.

[elf] hundreds chart coloring

Yep, another one!
This time the clue cards use ten rods and single cubes.
It's much more visual.
My kiddos did LOTS better on this one!

The 0-99 chart is HERE.

It's almost winter break. . .

[Counting and Number Patterns] Rudolph on the 0-99 chart

This is still a very novel idea for my kiddos, so I'm going to get as much mileage as possible out of it before they revolt.  ;)

The coloring of the Christmas Tree yesterday was indeed a very good practice/introduction to number patterns.  A few of my smarties even started to pick up on the 10 more/10 less pattern on the chart!  YAY!!!
(Of course, being able to figure out the answer and explain it mathematically earned a lollipop, so that might have helped too, lol).

However, it took us a L.O.N.G time to finish that Christmas Tree!  A very.long.time.

Today's activity only has 30 clues.
14 less than yesterday.
And we're making Rudolph!
My monkeys have a slight fascination with that red-nosed reindeer.
Should be an adventure.

You can find the colored Rudolph and number clues HERE.
And the 0-99 chart HERE.

Enjoy.

[Counting and Number Patterns] hundreds chart activity, making a Christmas Tree

Today begins our Topic 10.
Counting and Number Patterns to 100 (120 in the Common Core).
We'll begin our study with a coloring activity (I know this is nothing new - there are about 121 different activities exactly like this floating around out there).
Today we'll be creating a Christmas Tree on a 0-99 chart.
I prefer using the 0-99 chart for the number pattern it shows.
Eventually (sooner, rather than later), we'll move to the 1-100 chart.
Then I'll add the 0-119 chart.
And finally the 1-120 chart.

Back to today.
We'll be working with the 0-99 chart and clues that focus on 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less, and tens and ones.
There are 44 clues.  Should give us a pretty good practice session.
Or make me crazy.

The Christmas Tree (colored) and clues are HERE.
The 0-99 chart is HERE.

It really is the un-Grinch like thing to do.  ;)
