[Cattle Round-Up] CCSS 1.OA.D.7

CCSS1.OA.D.7 ~ Understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false

Here we go again.  ;)  Image is linked.  $2 at Teacher's Notebook.  Practicing equations with values of 1-6 only in this set.

Last night my brain tumbled around and around and over and over with game ideas for this concept.  This is the one I settled on this morning, although I may or may not have a game of SCOOT in the works also.

I find that once I start working on games/plans/etc... just being creative ... that my creativity increases like crazy and I have ideas tumbling about in my head all the time.  That makes me happy and I am determined to not let go of this chain of creativity that seems to have found me.  It usually doesn't stick around for more than a few days, so I need to harness it and use it while I can.

Gratefully Luke just picks up all the slack all the time, and more so when I get locked into creative mode.  Yesterday he washed the dishes, did all the laundry, and swept and vacuumed the whole house.  I'm pretty spoiled.

Have a great Sunday!  Hopefully I'll "see" you tomorrow with something else new and fun.

[Back to School] Reading_Handwriting Fluency Pack

It's almost Monday.
First Monday of my school year.
Some of my friends have their very first day on Monday.
I'm really glad we have 2 days under our belts!

My new littles are AWESOME!
Don't get me wrong, I totally miss my littles from last year (and every other year, lol).
But. . .my new littles are lots of fun and really listen well (for the most part!).

We start formal reading groups the Tuesday after Labor Day.
I want to get a jump start on reading before then.
So this week, we'll be using one of these fluency pages to practice our reading and handwriting fluency.
There are 5 in this pack, enough to get us through September.
They're a fairly simple read.
Perfect for the start of the year.
If you're looking for a quick and easy way to practice reading and handwriting fluency, give these a shot.

Have a great week!

[It's been a while. . .] and POW! tens

It's been a while!
Thanks for sticking with me.
Things are going as well as can be expected on the home front.
As always, you can check updates on that at Team Kenton.

One day when I was at the hospital with Kenton (last week sometime), I kept thinking of this game that I wanted for my classroom.  So I made it.  :)
And I printed it, laminated it, cut it apart, and made Kenton play it with me.
He LOVED it!
And today, I made McKayslin and Luke play it with us.
McKayslin LOVED it also!
(Luke, not so much because he kept getting beat, lol).

I didn't know if I'd be able to share or sell it because of copyright restrictions.
So I asked Dustin Pike (DoodleDragonStudios) for direction.
His response was that if the art was credited to him, I was within copyright.
YAY!!!!
So. . .here it is.

POW! ten.
You'll love it!
Your kids will love it!
They'll be proficient in facts of ten in no time at all!
It's a fast paced game (seriously less than 5 minutes per round - that's with 2 players - when all four of us were playing, it was about a 3 minute round).
Very little prep on your part - just print, laminate (if you wish), cut, and play.

Now. . .here's the deal.
POW! ten is only available at Teacher's Notebook.
It's 3 bucks.
3 little dollars.

BUT. . . as a special thank you for still following this poor neglected blog. . .if you purchase POW! ten in the next 24 hours (deadline is Monday, August 14, 9:00 pm) AND leave feedback at Teacher's Notebook, I'll send you POW! eleven, twelve, thirteen. . .all the way to POW! eighteen absolutely FREE!  I will be adding these to my Teacher's Notebook shop soon.  You can have them ready to use in your classroom before school starts before I even list them!  :)

Just be sure to leave either a comment HERE with a valid e-mail address or leave a valid e-mail address when you leave feedback at Teacher's Notebook so I know where to send your bonus files.

Have a great week!

[Reading and Handwriting Fluency] FREE passage

After attending a professional development day with Anita Archer and reading a book by E.D. Hirsch, I realized that I was neglecting 2 very important things in my everyday teaching! Daily handwriting fluency practice and scaffolding/building background knowledge with my children!

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, I'm offering a FREE non-fiction reading fluency passage and handwriting fluency practice worksheet.  Using these daily in my classroom has been one of the smartest things I've ever done!
This FREEBIE contains 1 passage geared for first graders in the spring. This passage may be very easy for some students and very challenging for others. Many of the words are decodable or sight words. Other words are easily taught within the short framework of the passage.
Students read the passage daily together with the teacher to build reading fluency (speed, accuracy, expression). The first day of reading, the class works together to identify new vocabulary (and the meanings of those words!) along with 3 new facts they learned through the reading. Days 2-5 are spent reading the passage and then copying as much of it as they can onto a handwriting fluency page.
This stuff really works!  I have seen handwriting improvement in 100% of my students! Their goal is to write "just like Mrs. Reynolds." They LOVE the challenge, and yes, that improvement does transfer to other academic areas as well!

If you're interested in other passages, please check my Teacher's Notebook Shop where everything is 25% off this week!  :)

[MIM strategy, Facebook, Upcoming Sale]

We're working a lot on addition and subtraction strategies.
Still. Forever.  LOL.

Some of my littles are struggling to figure out exactly how to solve an equation that looks like this:  9 = ____ -6.
Many of them simply write 3 as the answer without really thinking about it.
Yesterday we spent a good 15 minutes talking about why this is NOT reasonable.
I handed one of my littles 3 Skittles and said, "Okay, give me 6 of them back, and with your 3 and my 6, we should have 9 altogether."
Much laughter.  "Mrs. Reynolds!  I CAN'T give you 6. . .I only have 3!!"
"WHAT?!" But that's what you wrote as your answer - that 3 take away 6 = 9!!"

Ohhhhh!!  Lightbulb! (for my Despicable Me fans, please say that in the appropriate voice)
At least for some.  Others still had that totally blank look.
We talked about WHAT the answer SHOULD be and how they solved that equation.

And we tried again.
4 = ____ -5.
This time I heard a fairly even mix of "1" and "9".
Broke out the Skittles. Again. Candy makes everything easier, right?!  ;)
Handed one of my littles that swore up and down that "1" was the correct answer 1 Skittle and said, "Okay, you have 1.  The equation says 'take away 5,' so give me 5, and with your 1 and my 5, we should have 4."

I think we did this about 5 times.
There were more lightbulbs than blank stares at the end.
I hope the lightbulbs stay lit!!

One of my littles came up with the following strategy:
"Let's call it the MIM strategy - when "M" is in the middle, we add the outside numbers and get the correct answer!"
(We say the sound "m" for any blank in our equations)

Hmmmm. . .higher order thinking going on right there!  YAY!!!
So. . .we wrote the strategy and tested it.
And tested it.
And tested it.
And guess what?!  It worked EVERY.SINGLE.TIME!
There might have been much cheering.

Definitely a happy moment.

Continuing randomness - I now have a Facebook Page for My Little Classity Class.
Please stop by and "LIKE" me.  ;)
I'll figure out one of these days how to put a facebook badge/button/thingie on the sidebar.  Maybe.

And last random note for the day - I'm having a 25% off everything sale at Teacher's Notebook for Teacher Appreciation Week, so if you've had your eye on something in my shop, wait till Saturday.
Teacher's Notebook is having a HUGE teacher appreciation bash with awesome prizes and sales.  I'll post more info tomorrow.

Thanks for sticking with me to the end of this really long and random post.
Happy THURSDAY!!!

[true -OR- false] Bunches of Bunnies

Congrats to Rhonda and LuckeyFrog Jen!
You both had 7 correct answers!

I've e-mailed your Bunches of Bunnies file.
Thanks, everyone for playing!!

I am love love loving these cute Alice Smith bunnies from DigiWebStudio!  :)

Today we had PD in the morning with Anita Archer.
It was delightful!  Lots of great ideas for writing/handwriting!
Our afternoon was a school directed PLC which happened to be reading a book and writing a response.  It's due on Friday.
So. . .I spent the afternoon dejunking my back counter area.  I even wiped down the counter!  AND!!! Behind my desk is now cleared.  I can open my cupboards!  LOL.
AND!!  I even prepped my handwriting/reading fluency practice for the week, refilled my math timing tubs, and ran my Larry Leprechaun Brainiac sheets for each day.
Whew!  I was tired!
Even crazier?  I did it all while wearing a skirt.  And jewelry.  If you know me at all, you'll understand why this is such a big deal.
After "school" I taught 3 piano lessons.  Luke took the kids to the dentist.  No cavities, but Bubs needs to go see an orthodontist.  Guess that means no eye surgery for me this year. . .unless we put away more than we remembered into our flex spend accounts?!

ANYWAY. . .Bunches of Bunnies.
true -OR- false
1.OA.6 – Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
1.OA.7 – Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.
Due to copyright, this item cannot be offered as a free download.
However. . .it's only $2.50 at Teacher's Notebook!
Want a FREE copy of this game?
Simply leave a comment between NOW and 8:00 pm Tuesday night (standard mountain time) answering the following questions with either TRUE or FALSE.  The commenter with the most correct answers WINS!  :)
1. My dog's middle name is the same as my little girl's. TRUE - that's what happens when you let the kids name the dog, lol.
2. I am not a good cook. FALSE - I cook all the time and have been told many times that I make pretty darn good food.  :)
3. I teach piano lessons. TRUE - 12 students.  But I do NOT teach my own kids!  For their safety and my sanity, I pay someone else to teach them piano.
4. I cried when I was told I was being moved to 1st grade. TRUE - I was devastated!!  Now I wonder what all the fuss was about!
5. I love tomatoes. FALSE - EWWWWW!!!  I do not like them Sam I am!
6. I think pizza is disgusting. FALSE - I have been known to eat pizza 3 times in one week.  I LOVE pizza!!  Thankfully so does my family!
7. We go on a family date every Friday. TRUE - it's one of the best traditions we have!
8. I can eat a can of olives all by myself. FALSE - double ewwwww!  Part of this stems from a traumatic childhood experience that involved my farmer cousins and a dead bloated holstein cow. . .you really don't want to know!!
9. Chips and Salsa are a favorite lunch. TRUE - which is totally insane because I do so dislike tomatoes!  But. . .I adore fresh salsa for lunch!!
10. My least favorite household chore is cleaning the toilet. FALSE - it's actually doing the dishes!  Crazy, right?!

[stuff]

Yesterday was a less than spectacular day in first grade.
Honestly one of the toughest, most frustrating days I've had in my career.
It was a day full of discipline needs from the very moment the first bell rang.
Disrespectful to adults in charge.  Bratty attitudes.  Lying.
And that was the first 10 minutes of school.
It went downhill from there.
Sigh.
I hate, hate, hate days like that.

Went to bed with a headache.
Woke up with a headache.
Got the 6th grader off to school without incident.
Thankfully.
Last night he had a major meltdown about a math problem.
We might have had some yelling and crying.
And am currently dealing with the crying 2nd grader.
She's not feeling well.
And is exhausted from not sleeping well.
Yep.  Looks like a grand day here.

BAZINGA!
**If you are the first person to comment explaining the BAZINGA comment, I'll send you either the pre-primer sight word smash game or the primer sight word smash game that are available exclusively at Teacher's Notebook!  Maybe brightening someone else's day will help me find my smile this morning?**

So. . . today's going to be a day of survival.
An attempt to be more patient.
More thoughtful.
It has to get better than yesterday.

Many thanks to all who left such kind and supportive words about the SMASH game yesterday!  You made me smile!  It's a new favorite in my classroom.  My littles LOVED the challenge of the "bonus" cards (the ones where they had to say the whole phrase with the correct mathematical comparison term - ie: 28 is "ten greater" than 18).

I'm working on some add-on sets of cards.  Some of my littles need very specific practice with numbers of a smaller value before being thrown right to the larger value numbers.

How do you deal with days like yesterday?

[In the Doghouse] reading fluency game

This game started as a way to help my struggling littles with their reading fluency.
It quickly progressed into a full blown board game.
Printable in black and white only (I'm cheap and don't like to print in color!).
Gameboard.
2 sets of cards.
Nonsense words (40 cards) and sight word sentences (24 cards).
Practice in both areas is especially important for those littles that are struggling.
I'd LOVE to give a copy of this game away!
Please leave a comment (don't forget to include your e-mail address) and I'll draw a winner on Thursday morning!
Because of the time invested in this game, it's available exclusively at Teacher's Notebook.
At the cost of only $3, it's a pretty darn affordable classroom resource.
If you purchase the game, and are my lucky winner, I'll either refund your purchase price, or you can choose any other item in my shop.  :)
Thanks to Nikki at MelonHeadz for the awesome clip art!
