One more game.  One more chance for my littles to practice this before the test. I'm pretty sure that I found and fixed any errors.  However, if you see something out of place, PLEASE let me know.  Image is linked.  This one's free for a few days.  Maybe forever.  

Bread is rising, and I'm going to do something.  Not sure what.  Maybe play with paper.  Maybe make a game for the next chapter.  Maybe make a review sheet for Go Math Chapter 5.  Maybe have a nap.  Wouldn't that be so nice?!

McKayslin and I went to town today and found some great things to decorate Kenton's grave for Valentine's Day.  Tomorrow after school we'll stop to see our boy, take down Christmas (finally!), and put up llloooove day.  Thursday marks 2 years that Kenton's been gone.  This is a super hard week for our family.  Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

CCSS1.OA.D.7 ~ Understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false

Last night my brain tumbled around and around and over and over with game ideas for this concept.  This is the one I settled on this morning, although I may or may not have a game of SCOOT in the works also.

I find that once I start working on games/plans/etc... just being creative ... that my creativity increases like crazy and I have ideas tumbling about in my head all the time.  That makes me happy and I am determined to not let go of this chain of creativity that seems to have found me.  It usually doesn't stick around for more than a few days, so I need to harness it and use it while I can.  

Gratefully Luke just picks up all the slack all the time, and more so when I get locked into creative mode.  Yesterday he washed the dishes, did all the laundry, and swept and vacuumed the whole house.  I'm pretty spoiled.

Wowsers did my kiddos ever struggle with this concept!  CCSS 1.OA.D.7 ~ Understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.

They did better yesterday than Wednesday, but a little more practice is absolutely necessary before our chapter test.  

So last night while Luke was off playing basketball with some friends, and McKayslin was sleeping, I sketched out this little game.  And this morning, I pulled up some of my favorite clip art and boom!  Here's the game we'll be using for review!

[Super Sonic Subitizing]

Student ETA: 8 days and counting. . .

Every year I have a handful of students that are unable to instantly recognize numerical dot patterns.

Huge deal?
No.

Big deal?
A little bit, yes.

Subitizing is a critical skill in first grade.

[It's been a while. . .] and POW! tens

It's been a while!

Things are going as well as can be expected on the home front.

One day when I was at the hospital with Kenton (last week sometime), I kept thinking of this game that I wanted for my classroom.  So I made it.  :)
And I printed it, laminated it, cut it apart, and made Kenton play it with me.

He LOVED it!

And today, I made McKayslin and Luke play it with us.

McKayslin LOVED it also!

(Luke, not so much because he kept getting beat, lol).

I didn't know if I'd be able to share or sell it because of copyright restrictions.

So I asked Dustin Pike (DoodleDragonStudios) for direction.

His response was that if the art was credited to him, I was within copyright.

YAY!!!!

We get to keep Kenton home for one more full week before he goes back for treatment!  :)

His marrow and spinal fluid are both completely clear of leukemia cells!!

Cause for celebration for sure!

The road is still really long with many twists and turns and unknown potholes.

This little addition game has been simmering in my brain for a while.

I finally took a few minutes to get it out of there and into playable format.

I think it's going to be a class favorite!

[Adding Astronauts] addition match game FREE TODAY ONLY!

Today only you can pick up this super cute FREE addition match game.

After today, it will be added to the "Rocketing to Addition" game pack.

I created this game using some scaffolding for success.

The "answer" cards should be printed with the astronaut with the flag on the back.

The "question" cards should be printed with the astronaut in the rocket on the back.

That way, my littles will know to choose one of each to try and make a match.

This game will be played in early September when addition is an incredibly new concept for most of them.  I want the focus more on the addition and less on the actual memory game.

This first pack contains ONLY sums that equal 10 or less

AND the doubles facts up through 10+10.

Doubles facts are easy to memorize and can be a useful strategy when adding neighbor numbers.  Plus, it made the number of cards come out evenly.  lol.

No reciprocal facts (ie: 1+3 does not appear on another card as 3+1).

Why?  Because there are already enough cards in the deck for beginner players.

No need to muddy the waters just yet.  ;)

Other packs will be added so the challenge level of the game may be increased.

That's my reasoning.  It makes sense to me, which may or may not be saying much. . .

2 more days of math class.

There was a killer problem on the homework last night that I *hope* I solved correctly.

If Susan invested $12,000 in two different accounts (a CD account that earns 7.25% interest and a money market account that earns 5.4% interest) and earned $730 in interest over the course of the year, how much did she initially invest in the money market account?

Um, I don't know?

Just kidding.  I did figure it out, and mathematically the answers are all reasonable, but it took me for.e.ver. and a LOT of paper because I kept trying different strategies and equations to get to the end result.  I only hope it's correct.  Guess I'll find out in a few short hours. . .

I know, why don't YOU figure this one out, leave your answer in the comments (along with HOW you solved the problem and an e-mail address) and if you're correct, I'll send you something fun!!  Then YOU can suffer right along with me.  Although you can probably figure it out in 12 seconds with 1/4 sheet of paper. . .

And, then, what a non-joyous start to the morning - the boy was getting ready to eat breakfast and head off with the scouts to put flags up for flag day when he grabbed the garbage can and threw up.  A lot.  :(

That means no helping with the flags and no baseball for him tonight.

He's sad.  I'm sad for him.

Besides, the whole throwing up thing just doesn't sit well with me.

That's Luke's job.

And he's at work.  Waaaahhhhhh!!!

Great tips for starting the year!

Looking forward into Chapter 1 (addition concepts), I created this fun little workmat that is free FOR TODAY ONLY!

I was thinking of putting this in a sheet protector and using smarties, skittles, cereal, or m&m's to mark off the sums so the workmat itself could be used over and over.  I have in my mind a recording sheet that I just need to get made that the kids could use to record their addition equations.  However, it's still in my mind.  Hopefully I can get it out of my mind and into cyberspace soon.  Maybe this afternoon. . .

[Trade or NO Trade] trading intro freebie

I am about to embark into the strange world of trading.

Not spouses or anything.

That would be weird.

Trading.  You know, what we learned as carrying.

Yikes.

But to answer Raina's question about number bonds first - yes, the number bonds on the brain busters sheets are just adding.  The number bond has the parts attached to the whole.  So if there were a number in the circle attached to both parts, and a number in one of the attached circles, but not the other, you would subtract.  Make sense?  If not, leave a comment with your e-mail address, and I'll see if I can explain it better.

Before I start expecting my littles to actually write the math fact WITH the trade, I want them to get a good grasp on which facts would NEED a trade.

I'm hoping this is going to help.

The PDF file is kind of HUGE!
You definitely do NOT need to print every card, nor do you need every card to play the game!  I added cards for the 20s (21-29) being added with 1-9.  So. . .there are 20 pages in the file!  Aaack!  It's all good.  (Right, Pete?!).
Why did I add the 20s?  Because my littles were simply trying to tell me the answer to the addition fact.  I didn't want that!  I wanted them to tell me if it was a TRADE or NO TRADE problem!  I *think* that by increasing the top addends by 10, they'll focus more on just the ONES place because the facts won't be so readily solvable.
Or something.

I was seeing some growth today just in the few minutes we had to play.
A few lightbulb moments.  LOVE those!

I'm still not finished with my math final and I think I have a broken toe. . .sigh.

It was a pretty okay day.  Math final is finished and handed in.  Toe hurts, but nothing like this morning.  Weird.  So weird.

[Monster Party Fractions] FREE game

My littles are pretty good at seeing fractional parts within geometric shapes.

They are, however, struggling to say the fraction that matches a group of objects. . .ie: 2 out of 3 are colored, so that is 2/3.

(I KNOW that 2/3 is NOT in our first grade core, but seriously, it's okay to practice it anyway, right?!).

This little Monster Party Game came about because of that need.

Easy to play - each little needs something to mark their space.  Everyone starts on the star.  The first little chooses a card (you'll need to make 3-4 sets of the monster cards), reads the sentence, looks at the picture, and says the correct fraction.  If he says the correct fraction, he moves clockwise to that fraction on the gameboard.  Play continues with the next player.  Players circle each level until they choose a MONSTER PARTY card at which point, that player moves to the closest MONSTER PARTY space and slides into the next level.  If a student lands on a space occupied by another player, she sends that player back to the star (OR. . .you can have them skip over that player and go to the next available space depending on the sensitivity of your kiddos).

I did make a 2 out of 2 card - I want my littles to start realizing that 2/2 = 1.

It's been kind of a rough week.

My littles are ex.haust.ed.

Truthfully, so am I.

We're still working on subtraction facts.

I know.

Our subtraction games are losing some of their appeal since we've been playing them for 2 months now.

We need something new.

BROKEN BONDS using the stinkin' cute clip art from AI Factory!

The game format is nearly identical to Bunny Hop.

The exception is that the character cards cause you to move backwards. 

This will make it an independent practice game for my littles that understand and really just need the practice so I can reteach those that really still are struggling.

Yay for that.

The bonds are parts of ten, doubles, near doubles, and the "teens" facts (but with addends of 10 or less because that is the core).

This game is now available on Teacher's Notebook and is on sale through tomorrow for only $1.60!  If you didn't get a chance to download it free, it's still an incredibly affordable resource that your littles will LOVE!

[GOAL!] a subtraction game

Winter came back to Utah this weekend.

Winter as in blowing snow and much colder temperatures the day after it was sunny, clear and in the 60s! Weather changes like this always throw my littles for quite the loop.

I was LOVING the vitamin D and warmth.  I know I'm not the only one ready to just be warm.  My own kids are ready for shorts and t-shirts, basketball in the driveway, riding bikes, jumping on the trampoline, being outside all day!

My littles adore this little soccer guy from Cre8tive Hands!

They also need a LOT of practice with subtraction fact fluency, so. . .why not combine something they LOVE with something they love a whole lot less?

As a bonus, soccer is a SPRING sport in Utah, so maybe, just maybe we can visualize spring?!

Goal! After teaching how to play this could easily be an independent activity for the littles that actually are understanding, with time for reteaching those who still just don't quite understand.

[Subtraction BINGO]

Bingo is always a class favorite!

This week in my classity class, my littles will play subtraction bingo.

This bingo download is super easy to use - way low maintenance.

There's only ONE bingo card!

The kids play in partners. 

Each partnership needs TWO copies of the card and ONE set of the playing cards.

I'm going to run a bingo card for each of my littles (on white), and a set of playing cards for each of them also (on a color).  That way when we have 5 "extra" (ha, is there ever "extra" time in first grade?!) they can pull out their bingo games and play a quick round.

[SCORE!] a comparison game

It's spring soccer season around these parts, and my littles LOVE soccer.

When I saw the adorable soccer player (football!) from Cre8tive Hands, I knew I had to use him to make a fun game for my class!!

My boys, especially, are going to LOVE this one!

Comparisons are proving to be a little tricky for my class.  I'm hoping that this game gives us a good understanding of the symbols.

Each player chooses a "goal" (greater than or less than).

Players take turns choosing a card from the deck.  They work together to figure out the correct comparison (see the built in scaffolding?!  Brilliant, no?!).  The card is placed in the goal that matches the comparison.  EQUAL cards are placed in the center of the field.

When a soccer boy card is chosen, the player that chose that card gets to take ALL of the equal cards from the center and put them in his goal!

Winner is the player with the most GOALS!

I think they're going to eat this up!!
