Anyone else flying by the seat of their pants need a fun little President's Day activity today?!

This one's easy.  Fun.  Teaches the littles a bit about Washington and Lincoln.

I'm running to get ready for a new little to join our class today while Luke gets to stay home with Little Miss.  She decided to develop bronchitis over the weekend.  Boo.  :(

I hate, hate, hate Valentine's Day!  HATE it!

Except the part where I get to celebrate it having a manners tea party with my littles!

That part I love, love, love!

During the day we'll be doing lots and lots of fun Valentine's Day math, writing, listening activities, and spelling.  How glad I am that people share such great ideas all over the blogging community!  We'll end the day with our tea party.  So fun!

(And then I have to get to go present at a district meeting for new teachers about academic rigor and accountable talk, but that's a whole other story. . .gulp.sigh.).

[groundhog day]

The past 3 days have belt an awful lot like that movie Groundhog Day where everything is exactly the same!  I'm finally feeling better (thankfully!) and heading back to school today!

It's snowing here, now.  :)

My plans for today (other than surviving and cleaning up after 3 days of being gone) include lots and lots of Groundhog Day math/reading/writing/science.  It's going to be a good day.  I hope.  My monkeys will either be SUPER well behaved or SUPER naughty.  I'm praying for the first. . .

Our day is going to look something like this:

We'll start with Phil's Math Message and a Groundhog Dot To Dot instead of our normal math timing.

Then we'll have reading groups.

After reading groups, we'll have a quick break, and come back to

A quick round or two of Where's Phil? will be followed by I have, Who has...with Groundhog Day vocabulary words and the creation of our very own Thumbprint Groundhogs!  We'll cut our little groundhogs out and head outside to make our own predictions.

Time to learn a SONG about groundhog day!

We'll do a regular math lesson, write a story (maybe something like this instead):,

 and go to lunch.

This super fun art activity will get squeezed in sometime today, too. . .

We'll have music and phonics and spelling.  Recess.  And learning stations where we'll be doing many more Groundhog Activities!

It's going to be a crazy busy super fun day!

And 100 day is tomorrow.  Wow.

[conversation hearts] alphabetical order EDITED WITH THE CORRECT RECORDING SHEET!

Looking forward to heading back to school today (even if I have to take a bucket or a port-a-potty with me!) so I can break out these fun conversation heart activities!

So far I've shared a Model Drawing practice and a Fact Family/Number Bond practice.

Today I'm sharing an EDITED Alphabetical Order practice activity.
One of my littles pointed out that, um, teacher, doesn't alphabetical have 2 As?!
Ha, ha, yep.  Guess it does.  This download has the correct version of the recording sheet.

I added a few more hearts to the download.  I'll still need a few sets to be able to give my littles each 4 hearts at a time, but that's okay. 

The past 2 days have been super quiet at my house with only sick little me here.

I've been so very grateful for Miss Jones, my fabulous colleague who ran all of my copies and prepped everything for my subs.  I owe her big time!

[conversation hearts] model drawing

Remember the Conversation Heart cards from yesterday?

Well, here's another activity you can do with those same cards.

This is a good introduction to Model Drawing or a good quick review of simple addition if you've been using Model Drawing a great deal in your classroom.  The lines will help your littles keep their unit bars nice and straight.

You will need an extra set of Conversation Heart cards unless you use this in a small group setting or just for a few kiddos.

[candy hearts] fact families and number bonds

My little classity class has some severe allergies this year.

All tree nuts and coconut.

Celiac.

Strawberries.

Did you know that nearly every "holiday" treat either contains coconut oil or is processed in a facility that processes nuts/grains?  To keep my littles safe, I've had to be super vigilant about what comes into our classroom for snacks and treats.  Certainly not complaining, though, because my littles are pretty awesome, and keeping them safe is much more important than any cutesy I've done this every other year activity.  :)

This does present some challenges, though, because a lot of those I've done this every other year activities are pretty fun.  So. . .we adapt.

For this year, we'll use paper candy hearts to fill in a number bond and fact family (like our Fact Family Friends page).

Whether you have allergy concerns in your classroom, a strict policy against treats, or just a desire to not increase the sugar to child ratio in your classroom, give this little activity a try.  Your kiddos might not even miss those chalky, slightly disgusting, candy hearts.
